WWE WrestleMania 27 Review(Results): April 3, 2011 | Latest exclusive news
Hello and welcome to this three-part review for WrestleMania XXVII. I decided to do a detailed analysis of this event because I feel it’s what WrestleMania deserves. I was looking forward to this event to see if they could make a bad card good.
So sit back relax, and see if they did their job, by reading this three-part mammoth review.
The show started with a rendition of America the Beautiful from Keri Hilson. She sung it very well, didn’t warble and didn’t try too hard to try and make it different. It was a suitable version of the song and I’m sure it made the American audience feel very patriotic.
Then the host arrived. The Rock came out to kick off the show and get everyone excited for what they were about to see. I can’t think of a better way to start a WrestleMania than with a promo from The Rock.
"Rocky" chants filled the Georgia Dome. They were deafening on television so they must have been even louder live! He promised to make it the most memorable WrestleMania of all time.
Now, to me, that means it has to be better than WrestleMania X-Seven. I know guarantees from the Rock are rarely wrong but I was a bit reserved about this promise.
The Rock had some fun with the audience and mentioned Cena was in the back choosing what colour to wear for the night. This sparked a chant of “Fruity Pebble” from the Georgia Dome. He also got a cheap pop for drinking the “people’s water”. Usually I would criticize this but it’s The Rock, it’s WrestleMania, I don’t want to be a negative Nancy.
He ended with an extended eyebrow-popping, pie-eating catchphrase and a pop at Santa. Only the Rock could upstage Santa. He got everyone to say his chant in unison and it was a near perfect setup for the biggest event of the year.
We were shown the commentary team and the fact that the Spanish announcers were there. The first thing that went through my mind when I saw them was; “I wonder how long their table will last...”
WWE decided to start off the event with the World Heavyweight Championship match. I don’t know when WWE got into the habit of putting main events at the start of the card but I think it is a big mistake. I think it takes away from the importance of the match as they used to be on in the order of importance.
Alberto came out in a flash car once again and Christian and Edge followed.
When the match began there were slaps back and forth until Alberto gained the upper hand by focusing on the bandaged arm of Edge. Edge then back-body dropped Del Rio to the outside and went for a baseball slide.
This was blocked and he was rammed into the guard rail then the stairs. Alberto then went back to the arm and used a variety of different submission holds, showing what he is capable of in terms of in ring skills.
Edgecution! - WWE.com Alberto then went through the ropes and took a horrendous bump. It winded me and I was just watching it. He tried to catch the ropes to break his fall but I don’t think it helped much.
Then, to add insult to injury, Edge cam flying over the top rope and landed right in Del Rio’s head! I really don’t think that was supposed to happen and it looked painful. Alberto was having a bit of a rough time in his first WrestleMania appearance.
Edge went to the top rope as the action returned to the ring, but was thwarted by an arm drag from the top. He replied with a spinning heel kick out of desperation and followed with a big boot. Edge got his offence going after these moves and looked to be taking control of the match.
The crowd was fully into the match by this point and were cheering nearly everything the Superstars did. It was good to hear and the match was deserving of it in my opinion.
Del Rio put a stop to this and went for the cross arm-breaker but it was countered. Edge then went for a pin , but after rolling through several times, Del Rio finally got the arm-breaker he so desperately wanted. Edge quickly scooted to the ropes.
Edge went for more high risk and Alberto hit him with an impressive Enzuigiri and it was at this point I could see that Edge’s and Alberto’s work rate was through the roof and they were building one of the most entertaining matches I’d seen in a long time. The crowd were still on the Edge’s of their seats and were reacting to the most minor things.
Vandal - WWE.com Christian and Brodus fought on the outside and Alberto took out Christian who was then thrown like a rag-doll by Brodus by a fall-away slam on the outside.
Edge went for the spear but Brodus hit his arm on the ring post and Del Rio locked in the arm-breaker once again after a struggle in the centre of the ring. Edge forced him to break by pinning his shoulders then slapped on the Edgecution.
Christian took out Brodus with a tornado DDT off the apron, while Del Rio managed to weasel his way out of Edge’s submission hold—but he then fell victim to a spear and Edge retained his title.
I couldn’t really fault this match. The only problem I had with it is the fact it was on first. Getting the crowd that excited right at the start of a 4-hour event can’t be a good idea. There is nothing to build on then. You can peak too soon and I think this is what happened with match quality last night. Nevertheless it was a special match to witness and epitomised WrestleMania in my eyes.
Edge decided to put the boot—and a tire iron—into Del Rio’s car as a celebration. He even went as far as giving the roof an elbow drop. I don’t think Edge likes inanimate objects. First he fights with a computer, then a car? Anyway, Edge and Christian left Del Rio with no way to get home. Bet it was along walk back to the hotel room.
Cole made a fool of himself as they were stalling for the next match. Bickering between commentators at WrestleMania—whatever next?
He either belongs in Heavy Rain or Saw, you decide - WWE.com Cody Rhodes came to the ring to face Mysterio with a hoody on. He had the hood up of course, and on closer inspection it looked like the cloak Jigsaw wears in the Saw films but shorter. It even had the red lining inside. I was gutted that they’d done away with his towel at first but when I got a better look at the lighting they were able to achieve with the hood I was instantly converted.
Mysterio kept up his tradition of dressing as a character from popular culture and this year he dressed as Captain America! I am very much looking forward to that film but not as much as I was looking forward to this match.
Rey started off aggressively, not giving Cody a chance to even get his coat off, until he stopped Rey’s highflying momentum. Cody tried to rip the knee brace off Mysterio as he took control of the match. He used his protective mask as a weapon couple of times before reversing a huracanrana into an Alabama slam. And when I say slam, I mean slam. It was brutal to say the least.
Rey went up top but was met by Cody who lifted him up in a suspended superplex—British Bulldog style! He held him for what seemed like forever and they both came crashing down from the top.
At one point in the match Cody was shouting at Rey; “This is my face!” I think this was a nice touch by Cody. I often think wrestlers aren’t vocal enough when it comes to their performances.
Cody went for CrossRhodes but was arm-dragged out of the ring where Rey huracanrana’d him right into the apron. Fancy moves by Rey resulted in a pin attempt in the ring but Cody kicked out.
Captain America couldn't get the job done - WWE.com Rey then began trying to remove Cody’s mask. I was worried this would happen as I thought it would mean the end of Cody’s character if he was unmasked, much in the same way part of Kane was destroyed when he unmasked. Cody blocked this attempt with a huge belly-to-back suplex.
Rey managed to set up a 619 which was caught by Cody (thank God I was getting scared at this point) and he managed to remove Rey’s knee brace. Cody’s mask came off not long after and Rey wailed on his face like there was no tomorrow, ending with a big kick which I thought might spell the end for Cody but he kicked out again!
Mysterio then donned the see-through mask and used it as a weapon and I thought Cody was done for when Rey hit the big splash. My heart was in my mouth when once-again he kicked out and escaped the ring.
The end of the match consisted of Cody catching Rey with the knee brace as he attempted to fly through the ropes and then a CrossRhodes in the ring. I couldn’t be happier with the result of this match and the performances the Superstars put in. They had a great match which most certainly kept me on the edge of my seat I can tell you. Two fantastic matches to start the event!
Cody used his mask to hide himself as he exited the arena.
By this point I was starting to think The Rock’s promise was going to come true and this would be the WrestleMania to beat X-Seven
