WWE News: The Rock Taking on a New Role in Hollywood
The Rock had an incredible career in the WWE, becoming one of the biggest stars in the Attitude Era and earning a reputation as one of the—if not the—greatest talkers in the history of professional wrestling.
His success in the business allowed him to transition to acting, where he’s become a pretty big name in Hollywood. Sure, he’s had a few duds here and there (like The Tooth Fairy), but he had some hits sprinkled in there as well (like Walking Tall).
The Rock has already accomplished a lot on the screen, but he’s now going to be working behind it.
From sescoops.com:
Earlier this week it was announced that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and television/Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer will be working with NBC to create a new drama series based on the professional wrestling industry during the 1980′s. To follow up on that story – the pilot that will be filmed will be a “put pilot” – which means NBC has contractually agreed to air at least the pilot once it is produced. Typically, a show getting a ‘put pilot’ is a strong indication the show will be picked up for a full season.
The Rock wrote the following on Twitter about the show on Wednesday night:
Kickin’ Ass! Excited to partner up w @BruckheimerJB & @NBC to create 1980′s wrestling TV drama.”
Count me as one of the people who can’t wait to see The Rock’s new show.
It’s no secret that professional wrestling has some sort of stigma when it comes to the acting world. Though there are the obvious exceptions—guys like The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin—Hollywood tends to shy away from casting wrestlers or former wrestlers in major roles.
See: Triple H and Conan the Barbarian.
So, to see a major producer like Jerry Bruckheimer pick up a show that’s actually based on the wrestling industry is huge news. Unless you count shows like MTV’s Made, there is little to no shows that show the backstage atmosphere in pro wrestling or the real-life drama that wrestlers often deal with.
Hopefully, The Rock’s new show will do just that.
The last time we saw Hollywood produce something based on professional wrestling, we got The Wrestler, a movie that starred Mickey Rourke and showed some of the darker sides of the business. It was undoubtedly one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
Vince McMahon wasn’t too thrilled about The Wrestler, though, as he thought that it showed the “minor leagues” and put professional wrestling in a negative light.
Could we see something similar from The Rock and Bruckheimer’s new production? It’s a definite possibility.
I can see Vinny Mac freaking out already.
As for me, I can’t help but be excited about what has the potential to be a great TV show about the business that I love.
